Conducting business impact analysis

Carrying out a business impact analysis

The business continuity software includes an effective automated calculation process based on User controlled criteria for simplifying the BIA assessment procedures. All calculated values may also be manually overwritten by the User if required.  The BIA process is undertaken in Module 3 where each product, service or other critical objective is assessed to determine the extent of likely impact following a disruptive incident that caused serious interruption to creation or delivery of that product, service or other critical objective.

Click on the BIA icon in Module 3 to access the following BIA screen:

For each chosen impact category the User needs to make an assessment of the extent of the impact following an unexpected interruption to the selected critical objective within each impact time period. The User will choose, on a best judgment basis, the impact that is most likely to occur on a worst case basis by the time that the end of each BIA period has been reached. Guidance for each impact category can be obtained by clicking the "?" icon displayed beneath each impact category dropdown in the BIA area. This impact category guidance can be customized by the User to fit the requirements of their own organization. This customization is done in the BIA set-up area. The impact selector under each impact category is programmed to assist selection on the basis that the impact arising from an incident will remain the same or get worse over time rather than improve.

Activities for carrying our a BIA assessment are covered in this section under the following headings:

  • Choosing relevant impact categories
  • Establishing impact values
  • Substitute manual values
  • business continuity cascading process
