Validate RTO calculations

The RTO validation screen

Within the  business continuity software the BIA calculations for RTO, MTPD and criticality are semi-automated although the User can overwrite any values that are not considered suitable. This area deals with those values and the supportive calculations for assets and resources. The User can select to validate RTOs, MTPDs, or criticality by clicking on the respective radio buttons. Click on the Validate button to display the following screen:

RTO process

The RTO values (in terms of elapsed hours from the point of disruption) represent the recovery time objectives calculations for each asset or resource. If they have already been set up by the User, BIA impact values are displayed in the validation area for each of the BIA time periods for up to a maximum of five impact categories.  The highest rating for each time period is then displayed in the right hand column. The User managed system-wide BIA settings are then used to calculate where the RTO value is to be set. If, for example, the RTO value has been chosen by the User to be set prior to the impact reaching a "serious" level then the RTO value will be calculated as the period before the highest rating reaches "serious" or worse.  If the User does not agree with these settings then the User can either adjust the system-wide settings, adjust the BIA ratings for the related critical objective or over-write the result. If there is no over-writing of the RTO values for the selected critical objective then this value will be blank in the validation screen.

Using the RTO validation screen

The list box located at the top left of the screen contains the assets & resources that have been set up in the system. This list is sorted in ascending RTO value order.  Moving between the RTO, MTPD and criticality validation screens is achieved using the radio buttons to the top right of the screen.  Clicking through the main list box selects each record in turn for validation purposes.

In the main validation area the five system-wide time periods selected by the User organization are shown together with the impact categories that have been set up for the selected record.  For each time period within each impact category an impact level has been set. The BIA values are adjusted for the dependency rating with the level of dependency governing the number of time periods that the BIA values are adjusted. The far right hand column displays the highest rating for that record in each time period across the impact categories.

Beneath the first line in the right hand column the system-wide setting for RTO values is shown.  This setting value is then applied to the rating shown above and the results shown in the next row down.  If a manual overwrite value has been added to the selected record then this value will be shown in the next row down.  The final RTO value for the selected record is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
