Workaround process set up

Setting up workaround processes for key processes & activities

Each critical process or activity should have a workaround plan that would be instigated whenever a particular asset or resource malfunctions, becomes unavailable or stops working. A workaround plan should provide the ability to enable the dependent process or activity to continue to a minimum acceptable level of performance.

A workaround plan should provide the ability to enable the dependent process or activity to continue to a minimum acceptable level of performance.

Each workaround will depend upon the nature of the affected process or activity and the ability to keep the process or activity operating to an acceptable level following loss of critical assets or resources. For example, the workaround for a credit control process following the loss of access to critical data could involve ensuring that printouts at an agreed recovery point objective (perhaps close of business the previous day) are available, even in digital form, so that work can continue with careful checks until access to the critical data is restored.  Feasibility studies should always be carried out before setting up workarounds and budget approval sought. Where significant expenditure is involved, a cost benefit analysis should be undertaken. The workaround, once put in place, should be tested in realistic conditions to ensure it is fit for purpose.
